We have been providing foreign language training for over twenty years and the Covid19 pandemic, which is still widely spreading in Europe and the world, has also had a major impact on our company.

Most of the participants in our courses are managers and professionals of all types of companies, who have always preferred in-company face-to-face courses. The lesson in the presence of the teacher, whether it was an individual or group course, has always been seen as a must not to be questioned, at the expense of distance lerning perceived as less effective and productive.

However, recent events have profoundly and suddenly changed the way of teaching the foreign language and the barrier of reluctance towards distance learning has fallen, leaving great opportunities to emerge.

As in the case of compulsory public and private education, as well as in our case, the delivery method of language lessons is, to date, totally unbalanced towards training with digital audio and video means.

The initial reticence has left room for interest and, from week to week, more and more people ask us to be able to take advantage of distance lessons. Compared to the past, the opportunities offered by technology today are different; there are students who prefer Microsoft (Skype or Teams) tools, others who prefer Zoom or other platforms.

Whatever the tool used, the feedback from managers at the end of the lessons are always positive: it is observed that the level of concentration has been higher all the time and – at the end – the lesson has been, overall, more effective.

This terrible pandemic will end and allow us to get up and look positively towards the future. We are convinced, however, that distance learning has carved out an important role, which is unlikely to be shelved. The face-to-face training will certainly not disappear, but it will be able to go hand in hand with the distance one, which will certainly prove the best solution for many situations such as smart working, transfers or business trips.
